If you're interested in developing new treatments for diseases, we need you to first become an expert on how disease works on a molecular level. We want to give you the skills you need for a career in medical research, academia, industry, and education.
This program is critically important to us here at UAB. That's why more than one-third of our graduate biomedical sciences faculty are directly affiliated with it. These faculty members represent various schools, departments, and research centers within UAB. And their interests run the gamut, from molecules to whole organisms to disease processes, and more. To begin, your core coursework will cover a broad array of interdisciplinary subjects related to the pathobiology and molecular basis of human diseases. You'll take classes on topics such as pharmacology, biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology. You'll also have hands-on experiences during your lab rotations to explore and identify your research interests. Finally, as a member of our graduate student community, you'll have a bountiful network opportunities that will serve you well in your career.

A bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accredited college or university.
English Language Requirements
TOEFL (UAB code: 1856):
- TOEFL (minimum composite score of 80 and a minimum score of 20 for each section) and TWE for international applicants whose native language is not English.
IELTS: 6.5 overall with at least a 6.0 on each section of the examination
