About Biology, Bs in University of Alabama At Birmingham
Biology is the study of all living things—from molecules to entire ecosystems. And when you study all those things, you can do almost anything. Our alumni work in genetics, microbiology, spinal cord injury, brain development, and education, as well as in wildlife and nature conservation.
In our biology program, you'll have an amazing experience. For one, you'll be taught by our world-renowned faculty and scientists in state-of-the-art laboratories. You can even do fieldwork at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab on Alabama's Gulf Coast or in the Bahamas, Costa Rica, the Galápagos Islands, or Antarctica. Once you've completed your program track—Integrated Biology, Marine Science, or Molecular Biology—you'll have the prerequisites you need for medical, dental, optometry, or pharmacy school. You can even get certified to teach biology or general science through the UABTeach program.
- UAB biology faculty are frequent travelers to Antarctica, where they conduct research on marine life beneath the icy waters. The continent's McClintock Point is named for James McClintock, PhD, UAB Endowed Professor of Polar or Marine Biology.
- UAB’s Department of Biology has sent more graduates to medical, dental, and optometry schools than any other UAB department or Alabama university in the past 30 years.
