About Mechanical Engineering in New Jersey Institute of Technology
Mechanical Engineering applies the principles and problem-solving techniques of engineering from design to development to manufacturing to the marketplace for a wide variety of products and systems. Mechanical Engineers analyze their work using the principles of motion, energy and force — ensuring that designs function safely, efficiently and reliably, all at a competitive cost. Mechanical Engineering combines creativity, knowledge and analytical tools to complete the difficult task of shaping an idea into reality.
Mechanical Engineers need to be creative, analytical and effective at solving problems. And because they often work with professionals from other disciplines, they must be able to work in a team-driven environment, effectively listen to others and accurately communicate their ideas. To be a successful Mechanical Engineer, you also should possess computer savvy, mechanical and time-management skills, and a sharp ability in mathematics, particularly in calculus and statistics.

All first-year students who apply to NJIT must submit an official high school transcript in English. When evaluating your application for undergraduate admission, we are interested in understanding how you challenged yourself relative to the curriculum that was available at your school and the trends in your performance—especially your grades in math, science and English.
Your completed coursework should include English Composition, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Chemistry and Physics. We also consider the GPA (Grade Point Average) that is indicated on your high school transcript. We generally look for students in the top 25% of their class. For schools that don't use a ranking system, we consider a 3.0 GPA or higher to be the equivalent.
English Language Requirements
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Duolingo or is required of all applicants whose first language is not English - both on the undergraduate and graduate levels. The minimum score required is 79 for the internet-based TOEFL exam, 213 for the computer-based TOEFL exam, 550 for the paper TOEFL exam, 6.0 for the IELTS exam, 100 for the Duolingo exam (undergraduate applicants) or 120 for the Duolingo exam (graduate applicants).
