About Journalism in Eastern Illinois University
Vibrant journalism has been part of the American experience since before America was a country, and its mission has always been to tell the stories of its communities–to help the public understand and respond to the world around it. At Eastern, journalism majors continue that tradition by learning to report across a variety of platforms: in print, digitally and through broadcast, and they are armed with a strong liberal arts foundation that, besides journalism, can lead to careers in the law, education and the business world as well.
The strengths of our ACEJMC-accredited journalism program are a combination of
- skills-based courses along with courses in history, law and ethics;
- a dynamic alumni helping us navigate a changing industry;
- an award-winning faculty active at the scholastic, college and professional levels throughout the state and nation and who guide you through your Eastern journey;
- and an award-winning student media that let you practice your craft, whether focused on writing and reporting, photography and videography, design or editing.
From Day One, students take courses in their major and can work at our award-winning, daily student media: 30-minute, live TV newscast, newspaper, radio and yearbook.
Our majors are active in organizations that add to the journalism conversation by honoring excellence and achievement and by celebrating professionalism in our field.
