About Sport And Exercise Science Bsc (hons)/msci in York St John University
This course is centred around 3 core areas of sport science: physiology, biomechanics and psychology. You will learn how these specialisms interact to keep athletes healthy and performing at their best. You will gain both the academic knowledge and the practical skills you need for your career. You will learn how to improve performance at the highest levels in elite sport but also how to improve the health of individuals and communities through exercise. This includes examining the impact physical activity can have on preventing heart disease, obesity, dementia and depression.
The academic staff you will work with are active researchers who will keep you up to date with the debates and issues facing sport and exercise science today. While we are keen to share our passion for sport, we are also not afraid to confront the negative aspects of the industry. You will investigate contentious issues concerning:
- The impact of perfectionism
- Bullying and gambling in sport
- How money impacts the personal lives of professional sportspeople.
You will engage with these debates, respond to the latest developments and carry out your own research. We also keep your learning relevant by addressing contemporary news stories concerning sport as they unfold, delivering tailored lecturers to address the issues they reveal.
We have community partnerships across the region, leading to many opportunities to gain valuable industry experience. These partners also contribute to your academic study, with a guest lecture or case study from an industry professional on every module.
This course can be studied as a 3 year BSc (Hons) or as a 4 year MSci. If you choose the 4 year option you will graduate with a Masters level qualification. You can make this choice at any point during your degree.
Choosing this option means that you will:
- Stay for an extra year, gaining even more skills, knowledge and experience
- Be guaranteed a professional placement as part of your course
- Have more opportunities to build professional connections and increase your employability
- Leave with a postgraduate MSci instead of an undergraduate qualification, without needing to reapply for a new course.
