This degree aims to:

  • Develop your skills and knowledge in the main areas of chemistry (organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry) in an integrated manner with areas of specialism such as Pharmaceutical & Forensic chemistry, Biochemistry, Polymer chemistry, Environmental chemistry and aspects of Industrial chemistry. In addition, if you choose to undertake a sandwich degree, the course will allow you to acquire technical skills in the workplace and enable you to integrate knowledge gained in the theoretical aspects of the course into the professional environment.
  • Produce a graduate who is “fit for purpose”, who satisfies the academic and professional requirements for associate membership of the Royal Society of Chemistry, who is ready for employment in the chemistry or related industry, or who can progress to teaching, further study or research aspirations

Year one of this exciting new development covers the main areas of organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry with specialist modules in transferable skills and specialist topics. The theme of specialist applied chemistry topics will be returned to at each level of the course. Basic practical skills are focussed upon in the first year of the course.

Year two continues the theme of vertically integrating and developing your knowledge and skills in the four main areas of chemistry together with applied integrated specialist topics and more challenging practical work.

Year three will develop advanced areas of inorganic and organic synthesis, advanced analytical techniques, concepts of quality assurance and laboratory management, applied industrial, environmental and sustainable chemistry together with advanced extended practical work and a research project. Research will link to some of the main research interests of the staff which include Professor Marek Kowalczuk who is known for studies in the area of novel polymeric materials, in particular biodegradable and biocompatible polymers for medical and environmental applications, Prof Wenxin Wang who is interested in developing new biologically based materials to aid skin wound healing, intervertebral disc repair and cardiovascular disease, and Professor Craig Williams who specialises in zeolites and microporous materials with applications in gas purification, autocatalysts and environmental remediation of water courses.
