Accounting is a major and integral aspect of business life in all sectors and across nations. This programmes offers you experience in recording and reporting financial performance, monitoring and controlling activity and resources, sound operational and strategic decisions and more. You can choose to specialise in either financial accounting, taxation, risk management or management accounting. The degree is designed to complement many other subjects offered within the Joint Honours programme.

Course Details

Over the course of the degree you will be introduced to theory and principles of accountancy, beginning with the fundamentals such as numeracy, financial and cost accounting along with an appreciation of key organisational financial objectives.

There is the option to take a placement year in the UK or overseas, where you will be supported by the Centre for Work-Based Learning. Representatives from Accounting professional bodies and visiting speakers from a variety of businesses attend the University regularly.

Nationwide, MacIntyre Hudson and Mazars are examples of recent visits and are also some of the sponsors who provide prizes at our annual awards ceremony. Local sponsors include Grant Thorntons, Hawsons and Elsby. Elsby are a growing company who will be developing a ‘Young Professionals Networking Platform’ in conjunction with the University in the very near future.

Methods of Learning

For this course, taught study would be a combination of seminars and workshops which usually total 12 hours per week. We recommend that students spend 20 hours per week in self-directed study time, if you are studying part-time, contact time would usually be six hours per week and ten hours per week in self-directed study time.

Assessments

A variety of teaching and learning strategies are used including lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials, along with innovative methods of learning and assessment such as computer modelling and video presentations. Units are assessed separately using a mixture of examinations, coursework, presentations and projects.
