About Biological Sciences (physiology With Pharmacology) With Year Abroad in University of Leicester

Physiology is the study of study of the functions and mechanisms within living systems from the subcellular level up to the whole animal. In disease, pathophysiological mechanisms interfere with the normal function of these systems. Pharmacology is the science of drugs, leading to an understanding of their design, targets, therapeutic uses, side-effects and toxicology. You will learn how drugs interact with cells and tissues to control disease. This is a rapidly developing field with wide-ranging applications, particularly for medical science, where the study of disease requires a good understanding of both the underlying physiology and the relevant pharmacology. Over the programme, in addition to subject-specific knowledge, you will gain important transferable skills that will make you an attractive prospect for future employers.

Flexibility

At the University of Leicester, our Biological Sciences degrees are actually seven degrees in one. You can apply for the degree in Biological Sciences (Physiology with Pharmacology) or any of the five specialist degrees listed below. Alternatively you can apply for a general degree in Biological Sciences. All courses are also available as four-year MBiolSci degrees.

Whichever degree programme you choose, your first year will be the same. In the second and third years you will have a choice of modules from across the Biological Sciences portfolio. Selecting particular modules here will steer you towards the specialist degree of your choice. Alternatively you can select modules from across the entire portfolio and graduate with the broad knowledge that comes from a general Biological Sciences degree.

All of our Biological Sciences degrees include the option to change your programme, particularly in Year 1 and Year 2, subject to completion of the necessary modules.

Whichever degree you choose, your first year will be the same and you will have the same choice of modules in your second year and again in your final year. Selecting particular modules in your second and final years will steer you towards one of our specialist degrees (which doesn't have to be the one you originally applied for). Or you can make your own selection of modules in those years and graduate with the broad knowledge that comes from a non-specialised degree.

The other available specialisms are:

  • Biological Sciences (Biochemistry)
  • Biological Sciences (Genetics)
  • Biological Sciences (Microbiology)
  • Biological Sciences (Neuroscience)
  • Biological Sciences (Zoology)

Or a general degree in Biological Sciences.

What's the difference between Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences?

Our seven Biological Sciences degrees cover major aspects of biology and molecular sciences across a wide range of organisms from bacteria and fungi to humans and plants. Our four Medical Sciences degrees focus more closely on the application of those biological principles to medicine.

There is the possibility of transferring across from our Biological Sciences degrees to our Medical Sciences degrees within the first semester of Year 1.

  • Students who have successfully completed Standard XII examinations will be considered for entry onto our undergraduate degrees across the full disciplinary spectrum.
