Our learning disabilities nursing degree offers pre-registration training in this field. You will gain the specialist knowledge and skills to ensure that people with disabilities receive high-quality care, and learn how to work in partnership with the individual, their family and carers, as well as fellow professionals.

Your time will be equally divided between study on campus and periods on a nursing placement. We will also prepare you to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a registered learning disabilities nurse.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

We have excellent links with the National Health Service and other care providers. Through your placements, you have the opportunity to work in a range of different settings, including community learning disability teams, forensic services, assessment and intervention services and special needs schools. This will give you experience and knowledge of working with children, young people and adults with learning disabilities, including those who have more complex needs.

How long is my placement?

You will spend 50% of your time each year in these valuable work placements, where you will be assessed by qualified practitioners. These placements will be in a variety of institutional and community settings, which will enable you to fully understand the needs of individuals with a learning disability. As a learning disabilities nurse, you will play a vital role in providing specialist support and interventions.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

As a learning disability nurse, you can work in a variety of settings, including community, forensic settings, specialist schools, assessment and intervention services and hospitals across the acute and community sectors. Nurses in both hospital and community settings have opportunities to become managers, educators and clinical specialists.

We prepare you to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) as a registered learning disabilities nurse. The degree will ensure that you have achieved the outcomes identified in the NMC Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (NMC 2010), including the standards for competence and the Essential Skills Clusters and the requirement of Directive 2005/36/EC. 

The intellectual, professional, academic and practical competencies that you will acquire are informed by the European Tuning Project 2009, 3.2.
