Take your love of motorsport engineering to the next level and satisfy the academic requirements you need to progress to Chartered Engineer status. Our MEng course deepens and embeds your investigative and design skills through additional group and individual projects. During the first year of the course you will work on our Formula Ford cars, and learn about how race-car setup affects performance. Later in the course you will work as part of a student-led group on the design and build of a Formula Student race-car. This is a key part of the curriculum, and leads up to entering your car into an international competition at Silverstone – renowned as a testing ground for the next generation of world-class engineers. This course is absolutely focused on delivering top flight racing and engineering professionals. In your master's year, you’ll apply high-level analysis methods to design and problem solving, helping you develop professional, consistently accurate and responsible methods. You’ll graduate with the knowledge, hands-on experience and committed and driven attitude towards socially aware engineering you need to successfully enter the industry.
WHY STUDY THIS COURSE?
The full MEng (Hons) Motorsports Engineering course is a four-year full-time course or a five-year sandwich course with the industrial placement as the third year. The UCLan MEng (Hons) Motorsports Engineering is for those applicants who are self-starting and seeking to develop a design-development approach to problem solving. The course aims to provide access to exciting and challenging careers in motor sports engineering and satisfy the academic requirements for progression to Chartered Engineer.
Successful progression to the motor sports industry requires direct experiences of race teams, circuits and manufacturing. UCLan operates a ‘hands-on’ approach to manufacturing that includes a design-and-make exercise in Year 1, design-development projects in Year 2 (Year2 and 3 if you started in the Foundation Entry) , and the design and manufacture of a race car in the third year. We operate a motor sports club and a professional Formula Ford race team where students have attended nearly every race in the North West Championship since the 2001 season. The MEng (Hons) Motorsports Engineering includes all of these plus the development of analytical expertise and a professional approach to enable graduates to make very effective contributions during their first career post and progress to the highest level as Chartered Engineers. The personal and team projects develop excellent association with the processes within the design-development-manufacture cycle and the strategies associated with the development of vehicles and products for racing, the automotive sector and general engineering. The MEng extends the BEng (Hons) Motorsports Engineering with modules to fully develop the professional approach required by Chartered Engineers through extended analytical expertise and the MEng year. There is sometimes a 'fear' of engineering and physical systems. The health and safety depends on the manufacturing module which develops an awareness of machines and the associated risks. The racing is supervised by a full-time technician from the industry.
The course extends the BEng (Hons) Motorsports Engineering to develop analytical design skills and a masters year to provide progression to Chartered Engineer after completing postgraduate experience and appropriate responsibility. The BEng and MEng courses have the same first and second years.
