International business runs as a core throughout the three years and is complemented by a personal development theme. The BA (Hons) International Business degree at UCLan differs from similar degrees at other institutions in a number of ways. It is a course with the option of spending part of your time studying overseas. You can participate in study exchanges throughout Europe, the USA, Mexico and Australia.
International Business runs as a core throughout the course and is complemented by a personal development theme. The degree is designed particularly for those who will seek posts with international companies as graduate trainees or as assistants in functional specialisms e.g. marketing, sales, purchasing, HRM. In order to train students for the business world, much of the learning is through the use of seminar case studies and presentations.
In this course you will develop an understanding of the issues and key factors in the international business environment and provides some basic business skills and concepts necessary for further study. It also, through the personal development programme, develops self-awareness and personal transferable skills. Later you will develop and extends your understanding of international business and marketing theories and their relevance to the operations of international firms. It also encourages you to examine differing cultural values and their influence upon the operations of the international company. The final year has a central core which focuses upon strategic decision making and management issues and the role these play in the survival and competitiveness of the international firm. The dissertation gives control for progress and direction of study to the student.
The programme offers optional modules to complement the core modules. From time to time, the course team may expand or amend the options available, but the wide range allows students to develop their particular strengths and interests in Years 2 and 3. Those students who choose to study a foreign language can select from French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Urdu, and Arabic. These can be studied at beginners' level, post-GCSE or post-A Level.
The Business School's state-of-the-art Greenbank and Brook buildings are in the middle of the campus offering a comprehensive range of study, learning and social facilities including a cybercafé and easy access PC workstation rooms.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT
A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.
You will benefit from a variety of teaching and learning methods including: lectures, seminars, practical workshops, group activities, personal research and case studies. Personal study and independent research also form an integral part of the course. Some modules are part web-based with links to organisations such as professional bodies. You will also have the option to develop your skills in a variety of areas such as IT, web searching, social media, advanced excel and specialist Microsoft packages.
Assessment includes essays; reports; oral presentations; group assessments; investigating companies and tackling briefs from industry. In your final year you will have the opportunity to undertake an independent dissertation or company project. Exams account for no more than 50 per cent of the final mark (with exception of the accounting modules).

We have a strong business network between local and national businesses which you will benefit from, for example, there is an opportunity to attend guest speaker events, which are organised in conjunction with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and Chartered Institute of Marketing (CiM). The companies we work with offer internships, placements, live projects and mentors to provide you with excellent practical experience. The School also offers a number of electives and options that provide students with an opportunity to gain an additional professional body qualification.
OPPORTUNITIES
A feature of this course is an opportunity to study abroad: why not consider taking your second year modules at our Cyprus campus? You can participate in study exchanges throughout Europe, the USA, Mexico and Australia and there are generous travel bursaries to support these. You’ll also have the chance to study a foreign language as one of your options, although this is not compulsory.
On graduation you can pursue a career as an international business specialist within multi-national corporations, consultancy firms, joint ventures, financial institutions, law firms, government departments and manufacturing. In order to prepare you for the business world, much of the learning is through the use of seminar case studies and presentations.
