Want to work in the health and social care sector? Gain the skills you’ll need to work in youth justice, NHS trusts, private hospitals, children's services, social services, family centres and children's homes. This work-based learning programme comprises a set of courses in Health, Social Care and Mental Health and is aimed at meeting the skills required by the growing health and social care market. You’ll complete two practice placement modules (in Years 1 and 2) allowing you to develop a range of work-based skills. Completion of this two year course will enable you to progress into a Year 3 top-up degree.
DBS CHECKS
This course will involve you working with vulnerable groups of individuals, including children. In order to ensure that the University offers places on their programmes to suitable candidates you will all be required to obtain a satisfactory Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (formerly termed CRB). We will be able to guide you through this process once you have been offered a conditional place of study at the University of Central Lancashire.
It is important to note that should your Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check prove to be unsatisfactory for the purpose of the course you have applied to, your offer of a place for that course may be withdrawn. If you have already enrolled on a course and your DBS check subsequently discloses a criminal conviction, you may be required to withdraw from the course even if you have already started. If you are aware that your DBS check will disclose a previous conviction, please contact the course leader for advice as not all convictions may preclude you from continuing with the course.
LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT
A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.
We promote student centred learning. That means that we encourage you to become an independent learner through a variety of strategies including lectures, group discussions, workshops, seminars and, where appropriate, the use of the skills laboratories to practice your skills. You will also have the opportunity to undertake work placements to enhance your experience and help you to develop new skills. You will record these skills in a Skills Log which will be a useful record of your development when you seek employment.
Teaching and learning strategies include formal lectures, seminars, group activities and project work and private independent study. Work-based learning is integral to the course aims, enabling the use and evaluation of skills and knowledge in practice.
EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES
You will have the opportunity to go on an international trip - this year our students went to Poland to enhance their knowledge across health and social care in other countries.
By completing Year 1 of the course, you will have the option to apply for the BSc (Hons) Pre-registration Nursing, BSc (Hons) Midwifery, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and BSc (Hons) Operating Department Practice.
Successful completion of the two-year programme will allow you to gain access to the third year of the BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care and the BA (Hons) in Community and Social Care: Policy and Practice. You can also use this to gain entry onto courses such as nursing, physiotherapy, sports therapy and social work.
You’ll be able to use your skills in health and social care to seek employment within the youth justice systems, NHS trusts, private hospitals, children's services, social services, family centres as well as children's homes
