Electrical and Electronic Engineering at UCLan provides a balance between the interrelated but distinctly different areas of electrical engineering and electronic engineering. You will develop skills in power electronics, motor control systems, renewable energy and compliment this with in depth knowledge of electronics such as analogue circuits and embedded systems development. The course has practical modules based around building skills needed within industry such as problem solving in an engineering context, project management and communications skills. You will be given opportunities to explore specialist areas in our dedicated laboratories that include modern test and measurement equipment as well as more specialist equipment for power electronics and robotics.

  • You will develop skills in power electronics, motor control systems and renewable energy and complement this with in-depth knowledge of electronics such as analogue circuits and embedded systems development.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

A variety of teaching and learning methods is used, including traditional lectures, laboratory-based sessions using specialist facilities, computer sessions and simulations, tutorials, design exercises and directed study. The practical facilities are located in a purpose-built building with impressive computer facilities and dedicated laboratories.

Assessment uses formal examinations and coursework. The balance of assessment varies from module to module; a typical breakdown over the full course is in the range 60%-70% examination, 30%-40% coursework, exclusive of major individual project work.

OPPORTUNITIES

An optional placement year is available between years 2 and 3 of study. Research internships are also available within the school to allow you to gain experience.
