About Children, Schools And Families, BA (hons) in University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN)

If you’d like to work with children, young people and the services that support them, this course draws on subject areas including education, sociology, psychology, social policy and social work to give you a solid grounding for your career. You’ll examine the services, systems, policies and work practices that relate to children and young people in schools, with families and in care settings. You’ll carry out observational visits and work shadowing activities alongside the academic side of your degree, integrating theory, policy and practice so that you are well prepared for a rewarding career.

  • If you don’t already work with children, you’ll undertake work placements linking what you’ve learned with the real world of working with children, young people and families.

  • When you arrive, you will be allocated a tutor who will oversee your progress and support you throughout your degree.

This degree provides you with the underpinning theoretical knowledge and practical learning opportunities which will build a firm basis for developing a career working with children and young people and the services that support them. Students who hold a UCLan Foundation Degree in ‘Children, Young People and their Services’ can gain direct access to the final year of this degree. Other relevant Foundation Degrees may also be considered. 

The Children Schools and Families team span a range of disciplines including education, social work, sociology, psychology and social policy. Our academic expertise is informed by research and practice.

Our graduates have secured jobs working in a range of settings across the spectrum of the Children and Young People’s Workforce including children’s centres, schools, national charities, nurseries and family and community support. Our students have also gone on to obtain professional status in Teaching, Social Work and Early Years.

You can progress onto further study such as the MA Social Work and the MA in Contemporary Practice with Children and Young People. Off campus, students can progress to external teacher training courses relating to primary and secondary school teaching.
