Building Services And Sustainable Engineering, Beng (hons) in University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN)

Learn how to apply modern, sustainable and energy-efficient engineering systems in built environments on a course that’s well-respected by the building services industry in the UK and beyond. You’ll graduate with the ability to analyse, evaluate and ultimately solve problems associated with the built environment and building services engineering after studying areas including engineering services systems, controls and plant, energy efficiency and sustainable design, and project, resource and energy management.

  • You will learn how to apply modern, sustainable and energy-efficient engineering systems in built environments.
  • The course is a good start for engineers wanting to continue their academic development by studying a higher degree and/or other professional qualifications.
  • This course is accredited by CIBSE, preparing you to gain Chartered Engineering (CEng) status and is also delivered and validated by us in Hong Kong, VTC.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

A 3 year degree qualification typically comprises 360 credits and each 20 credit (a standard module) equates to 200 hours of study, which comprises of a mixture of lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions and independent study. Independent study is an important aspect of your degree course. The exact combination of study time will be detailed within your module descriptors, and will depend on your option choices.

We have links with Design Consultancies and local contractors as well as smaller companies in the region and offer help and assistance to more than 1,000 of these – with many of our graduates staying in the region it is important we develop these relationships.

Depending on the learning outcomes and the nature of the module the assessment strategies can be:

  • By completion of assignments and problem based examinations in the engineering and related modules throughout the programme.
  • By presentations, design based projects.
  • By student presentations, group work, design projects, dissertation, examination.

OPPORTUNITIES

As a full-time student you’ll be encouraged to spend an optional 48-week sandwich placement in the industry (between Year 2 and 3) in roles such as CAD operator or draughts-person. Using the optional placement year furthers your professional knowledge and increases your employability.

Our course is delivered and validated by UCLan at universities in Hong Kong, Singapore and Athens. Students may have the opportunity for overseas trips – in recent years we have taken students to Hong Kong for a week on exchange and also to the ASHRAE conference in the United States.

A concrete design experience as well as operation and maintenance, can boost your opportunities for career development, whichever qualification route is followed. With the arrival of the new sustainable building design concepts such as intelligent buildings, natural lighting design and renewables, new career opportunities can open up for alternative specialisms.

PROFESSIONAL ACCREDITATION
