Accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), which is essential for employment in hospital pathology laboratories, this course involves the study of health and disease and provides an in-depth understanding of how the human body functions during normal and diseased states. You’ll develop a range of laboratory based and theoretical skills associated with sound scientific practice. As a graduate you can work in diagnostic pathology laboratories, biomedical research or the bioscience industry.

Our course covers all aspects of modern day biomedicine including biochemistry, microbiology, physiology, pharmacology and molecular biology. We have a strong focus on practical experience ensuring that our graduates have real-world skills for a variety of careers both inside and outside of the laboratory.
In the first year of the course, you will study the fundamentals of bioscience, develop key laboratory skills and develop an understanding of bioscience in practice. In the second year, you will build on this knowledge to develop your understanding of biological processes and how these are disrupted in disease. In the final year, you will chose from a range of specialist modules taught by professional biomedical scientists where you will develop detailed knowledge in specialist disciplines including haematology, microbiology and histopathology.
You will also carry out a laboratory-based research project that will draw upon the expertise of our academic staff currently working in the areas of pain, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, Autism, drug addiction.

There are strong links between our undergraduate provision and our research; all of our courses are shaped by research-informed teaching, and our Centre for Research-Informed Teaching offers bursaried internship programmes to encourage those completing undergraduate courses to consider a research career. Those undertaking internship programmes are supervised by research-active staff.
