Human geography is a dynamic, exciting subject that focuses on the ways human activities affect the planet. On this course, you'll explore complex political, economic, social and cultural geographies — understanding and responding to the ever-changing world around us.
A variety of teaching methods are used, creating a stimulating learning environment. You're exposed to a variety of viewpoints from module tutors and their peers to become aware of the current debates within human geography. Learning from first-hand experience is a key part of the teaching approach on this degree.

Work placements
You will have the opportunity to arrange a year-long work placement in between your second and third years. This gives you a real-world experience to prepare you for your future career. This may involve working with private companies or government and voluntary organisations in the UK or Europe.
You may be able to study abroad as part of the Erasmus programme (subject to the UK’s continued participation in the Erasmus programme following the Brexit transition period). It's a great opportunity to focus on a career path and gain the skills, knowledge and experience to find a job after you graduate. Sheffield Hallam University has Erasmus and international study exchange agreements with over 100 institutions in 25 different countries. Current exchange locations include Prague, Paris, Neuchatel (Switzerland), Georgia (USA), Ontario and Victoria (Australia).
Field trips
There is a strong emphasis on the importance of developing your skills in the field, and gaining valuable first-hand experiences. You take part in a substantial amount of UK-based fieldwork, which includes local activities as well as a week-long residential trip outside Sheffield. Overseas residential field courses also form an integral part of the course, such as a week in New York, Amsterdam and Spain.
