Oxford Brookes is the ideal place to study History of Art. We offer you a broad education in the histories of art and architecture, and allow you to specialise in what most interests you.

We strongly emphasise studying works of art first-hand. You will examine works of art on trips to galleries and exhibitions in Oxford and London. Oxford's famous museums and historic buildings will give you access to world-renowned art. The Ashmolean Museum has a diverse range of art pieces from around the globe. You can also use Oxford's famous Bodleian Library in your final year. This includes the Sackler Library, which has an extensive History of Art collection.

Our teaching staff have an excellent range of expertise, specialising in:

  • drawing
  • painting
  • prints
  • architecture
  • art theory
  • sculpture.

Our friendly department will support you to get the most out of your course. We encourage you to refine and develop your own interests throughout your degree. And to discuss your work and ideas with us outside of class.

On this Fine Art course we encourage you to be engaged, explore and to take risks as you work towards your independent fine art practice. You will make use of our excellent contemporary and traditional facilities to produce challenging modern artworks.

We will introduce you to a range of practices that link traditional skills and approaches with alternative media such as sound, video and installation. You will develop imaginative and informed fine art practice and the ability to analyse and discuss contemporary art.

Our Professional Practice module will help to strengthen your practical and professional skills, preparing you for employment, further study, or self-employment.

You will benefit from our relationships with contemporary galleries and arts organisations. These include:

  • Modern Art Oxford
  • OVADA (Oxfordshire Visual Arts Development Agency)
