About Applied Psychology in Coventry University

Applied psychology uses scientific psychological principles, methods and findings to study and solve problems associated with the human mind and behaviour. It is widely used in mental health, occupational psychology, business management, education, health, product design, ergonomics, criminology and law.

This course is aimed at graduates who have previously studied psychology and want to further their general knowledge to an advanced level, as well as developing an understanding of how psychology is applied to a particular aspect of real life. Areas of applied psychology studied include: educational psychology, child psychology, clinical psychology and counselling psychology.

The extended version of the course ‘with Professional Experience’ contains substantive placement experience enabling you to gain real world experience in an applied psychology-relevant setting.

Course information

This postgraduate course centres on the study of psychology at an advanced level, incorporating: quantitative and qualitative research methods, ethics in psychology, professional practice and areas of applied psychology.

There are four applied psychology modules: 

Educational and child psychology: The psychology of child development, teaching and learning. We will introduce you to areas of learning difficulty experienced by children and how these difficulties impact on their experience of school and growing up. We’ll also consider issues of assessment, intervention and remediation. 

Counselling and clinical psychology: This examines the issues and skills employed in working with people with the full range of mental health problems, including bereavement, relationships, depression, anxiety, stress and psychosis. We will teach you how to explore underlying problems and empower individuals to make decisions for themselves which improve their personal wellbeing. 

For those undertaking the ‘with professional experience’ version of the course, during your first semester, you will receive guidance in how to apply and prepare for your professional experience in a series of employability workshops, designed to teach you a range of interpersonal and professional skills. 

In your final semester, you will be expected to conduct an extensive piece of independent research on a topic of your choice.

Career prospects

On successful completion of this programme, you should be equipped with the skills and knowledge, and in the case of the extended course, substantive professional experience, to enter employment in the health services, public health organisations, local and central government, academia or as assistant psychologists.

The specialist focus provided within this course is an ideal springboard for Doctoral programmes in Educational or Clinical Psychology. Alternatively, if you decide you wish to enter professional practice, you always have the option to follow up with a BPS accredited course and work towards Chartered Psychologist Status.

The programme aims to not only develops a comprehensive understanding of psychological theory and research, but also transferrable skills, such as IT, group work, communication, report writing, numeracy and presentation skills. As such, many of our graduates have been able to pursue careers in areas other than psychology, such nursing and teaching.

Applicants should hold the equivalent of a 2:2 undergraduate degree in Psychology.

Applicants holding an equivalent professional qualifications and experience will be considered, but must have a degree in either psychology or a relevant discipline, with at least 120 credits of psychology.

English as a Foreign Language This course requires IELTS of 6.5 overall, with no component lower than 5.5. Pre-sessional English is available if required.
