Course Overview
Sport and Physical Education at Cardiff Met has evolved in an exciting new way to take account of critical developments in the sport and physical education sector. The industry currently recognises the growing importance of health and wellbeing in promoting the physical, mental, and social development of children and adults.
This focus on health is a critical component of the Physical Education syllabus in contemporary schools across the UK and further afield. The new degree pathway: Sport, Physical Education and Health (Dance) at Cardiff Met, is at the forefront of academic programmes recognising this significant new focus in the industry and preparing students for life after graduation.
This specialist pathway within the BSc (Hons) Sport, Physical Education and Health degree focuses on the applied place of Dance as a creative art and physical activity focusing on creative practice, teaching and performance. The design of the pathway will allow you to develop your knowledge, understanding and skilful practices in Dance alongside in depth academic and practical knowledge of physical education and youth sport. Consideration of the health and wellbeing agenda within both areas will also provide you with the skills and knowledge that will allow you to establish and sustain healthy lifestyles in others. The pathway focuses on the current place of dance in the areas of Education, Health and Wellbeing and in encouraging participation in physical activity. Through Cardiff Met’s excellent links with Industry, the application and development of dance in these contexts will be explored; there will be opportunities for you to engage in work-based learning and placement experiences over the three years that will support the development of future creative and innovative practitioners.
In addition to the comprehensive theoretical and practical academic framework, you will be encouraged to build a portfolio of UKCC coaching qualification during your time at University. You will have access to a wealth of valuable experiential learning opportunities including National Governing Bodies and community sports initiatives. The SPEH (Dance) programme allows you to undertake some of the modules through the medium of welsh.
Course Content
In year 1, you will have six compulsory modules that will be the foundation of your pathway. These modules will provide you the context and scope for understanding the fundamental aspects of physical education, dance, coaching, sport and health upon various disparate population groups. This includes an understanding of theory into practice of pedagogical approaches, learning and social theories, and contemporary issues amongst sport and education communities. In addition, you will experience a broad base of knowledge related to the disciplines of psychology, physiology, biomechanics, and the research process. Finally, you will be given a chance to develop your portfolio by undertaking recognised vocational coaching and professional relevant qualifications.
In year 2, all modules will be compulsory as you continue developing skills and knowledge in the two areas of study, SPEH and Dance. Dance modules will develop your understanding of creative practice, healthy dance practice and the application of dance within different contexts. In addition, you will design and deliver opportunities to participate in dance. Sport/PE and Health modules will allow you to develop the theoretical knowledge in relation to teaching within physical education, health and wellbeing, whilst linking theory to practice by engaging with placement opportunities off campus and working with children on campus. Additionally, you will have two other compulsory modules that aim to develop a greater understanding of the research process, and to develop entrepreneurial skills and attributes within the industries aligned to SPEH.
In year 3, a key priority is to develop you as an independent, driven learner that can take control of your learning and ensure that this aligns with your first step into graduate employment or further study. For instance, you will complete a major project that can take different directions in your chosen field of study based on your individual interests and needs. You will have a specific module that explores the understanding, application, and reflection of teaching and learning in physical education, sport, health and wellbeing, in addition a collaborative project module will allow you to draw on your experiences and independently manage and develop a dance project in a chosen context, from inception to realisation. You will also undertake a work based learning placement that focuses on your chosen pathway.

During your first year of study you will have the opportunity to undertake technical qualifications in a range of industry relevant areas including sport coaching, exercise training & health and safety. These opportunities will ensure that you have the appropriate qualifications and experience to apply for one of the many work placement opportunities on offer both on and off campus. We will also support you to seek opportunities to work or study abroad. Work placements can give you a critical EDGE in gaining professional employment on graduation. Students who have graduated from Sport, Physical Education & Health (Dance) will go on to work in careers both within and beyond the Sport Industry.
This practice focused, specialist pathway will enable a range of career opportunities, fed by the increased demand for dance engagement and participation in a variety of settings designed to meet those demands by preparing skilled practitioners of the future. The programme will prepare you for careers focusing on dance, sport and physical activity in a range of industry sectors such as Education, Arts and Culture, Tourism, Sport, Leisure and Health. Other students will continue onto further study at master’s and doctoral level or to undertake a postgraduate certificate in Education.
