Course Overview
This course provides for advanced study in the field of Production and Engineering Management. It aims to provide managers, engineers and business specialists with key insights in to production systems which operate in a wide range of organisations. Specifically the objectives of this course are:
1. To develop production and engineering management theory at a professional level where it will also provide for a sound preparation for research or further study in the area
2. To develop and apply key knowledge and understanding of production and engineering management theory to complex systems, both systematically and creatively, to improve production management practice
3. To enhance independent and high level learning skills and personal development so that learners are able to work with self-direction and originality and to contribute to the discipline of Production and Engineering Management.

Course Content
Students will study 180 credits of specialist study in Production and Engineering management. The course is made up of 120 credits of taught study followed by a 60 Credit Research based Dissertation. The following modules will be studied:
· Production and Operations Management 20 Credits
· Engineering Project Management 20 Credits
· Quality Engineering Management 20 Credits
· International Trade Law 20 credits
· Advanced Manufacturing Paradigms 20 Credits
· Innovation and Product Development 20 Credits
· Technical Report and Reflective Analysis 60 Credits
There are three exit points from the degree; Postgraduate Certificate in PEMS (PgC) after successful completion of 60 Credits; Postgraduate Diploma (PgD) in PEMS awarded completion of 120 Credits; the MSc is awarded on successful completion of all taught elements as well as submission of a 18,000 word Technical Report.
Learning & Teaching
The modules contained within this course use a wide range of teaching and learning approaches. Standard lectures are supplemented by group discussion and group problem solving exercises and group games (game theory, Beer Game etc) in order to consolidate learning and apply theory in to a range of simulated production and engineering environments. Factory visits and guest lectures from experienced and successful Production and Engineering Managers from a wide range of industries will provide an enhanced view of the practical world of PEMS.
The dissertation module will encourage full-time students to work within organisations in order to apply their research work in to a real life setting. Part time students will be expected to apply their research in their place of work so that companies will benefit from the investment made in attending the course.
A significant amount of work will be required by the students through independent learning and self-study. During these periods the supplemented by the Moodle VLE where key texts and research papers will be available for students to use.
Each student will be supported by the allocation of a personal tutor who will provide pastoral support for the student’s time on the course. The Course Director will also provide strategic leadership and direction to the course and will be available to each student who has specific issues regarding course content and structure.
