Why Msc by Research in Biosciences?
The MSc by Research in the Faculty of Social and Applied Sciences aims to develop researchers who are conceptually aware, who can utilise a range of skills and methods, who can practise and develop their own research capabilities, and who can disseminate that research in a meaningful way.
We are a close-knit community of academics, researchers and students dedicated to the study of Life Sciences. You would be joining an active and dynamic post-graduate community and would have the opportunity to contribute to and benefit from this community.

This course is suitable for students who wish to continue their studies beyond undergraduate level.
The course is ideal if you:

- want to continue to doctoral level
- would like to undertake a research-based rather than taught Masters
- recognise the need for research training in your chosen career
- wish to learn in a multi-disciplinary environment.
What will i study?
Students from across our MSc by Research subject areas share a programme of study that explores the challenges common to all researchers. You will undertake an individual research project that will take the form of a thesis (25,000-30,000 words).
Full-time students will have 12 months to complete their research, while part-time students will have 24 months to complete. Upon successful completion of the thesis, students will be awarded an MSc by Research in their subject area.
Academic qualification equivalents:
- Bachelor of Arts/Science/Commerce degree of at least 3 years duration or Professional Degree (4 years+)
English language requirements (one of the below):
- IELTS : 6.5 or equivalent, with no less than 6.0 in Writing and no less than 5.5 in Reading, Speaking and Listening.
- TOEFL : minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening.
- PTE : overall score of 58 and no PTE communicative skills score below 50

- The weekly living cost for an international student staying at a residential hall/flat/homestay is 384.50 NZD, 305.75 NZD, and 360 NZD, respectively.
