About BA (hons) Music in Bath Spa University
Music at Bath Spa is varied, creative and contemporary. This is a practical, busy Music course, with weekly performances throughout the year (both students and visiting professionals).
You’ll devise, sing and play in a wide variety of styles, and have the opportunity to collaborate with students from other courses across the University. As part of the course, you'll be able to join a wide range of groups and ensembles such as orchestras, choirs, bands and world music groups including our own Javanese Gamelan.
As a Bath Spa Music student, you'll be part of Bath School of Music and Performing Arts. Based at the Michael Tippett Centre, you'll have access to a range of purpose-built facilities, and you'll be part of Bath Spa Productions, which organises events throughout the year including SparkFest – part of Bath International Music Festival. All this gives you valuable experience that you can demonstrate to potential employers and take with you into your future career
Want to study community music, singing or jazz?
We offer three specialised pathways in Music:
- Community Music – encompassing aspects of music as therapy and music psychology, this music course could be your route to working with community groups, music for special needs and music for health and wellbeing.
- Jazz – contemporary music from all genres including pop, folk and rock is covered on this music degree, which allows you to specialise in your interests – with a heavy focus on practical performance skills.
- Vocal Performance – this course is for you if you want to specialise in singing for classical and/or musical theatre styles. You'll get to grips with singing in different languages, acting and stage skills through one-to-one tuition.
Throughout this music degree you’ll study practical performance in areas such as classical music, jazz and contemporary styles, instrumental and vocal studies, composition and musical contexts from medieval through to the present day.
You can also study areas such as music psychology, community music, world music and issues within the music industry.
We currently have over 20 ensembles open to all students, including numerous choirs, symphony and chamber orchestra, wind band and jazz big band, jazz small groups, our own Javanese Gamelan, brass, wind and string ensembles, folk, and experimental music groups.
Careers
Graduates from BA (Hons) Music at Bath Spa go on to successful careers in a range of roles including those in education, special needs and community music, performance, composition, promotion, publishing and other aspects of the music business.
Academic qualification equivalents
- Higher Secondary School Certificate/Indian School Certificate (standard XII) from the following boards CBSE/CISCE/WBCHSEB, with 65%, including grade C in at least five subjects.
English language requirements (one of the below):
- IELTS:Academic 6.0 overall This must include a minimum of 5.5 in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
- TOEFL iBT: A total of 72, to include a minimum 18 in Reading, 17 in Listening, 20 in Speaking, and 17 in Writing.
- PTE: This must include a minimum of 51 in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.

Bath Spa University Average Tuition Fees And Other Expenses
International students joining the Bath Spa University are required to pay 70% of the tuition fees on or before arrival and commencement of the course. All payments should be made in £ sterling and the easiest way to make a payment is via Flywire. However, the payment can also be made through credit/debit card.
International students should open a UK bank account as soon as possible after arrival.
