You’ll develop the theoretical, technical and practical understanding you need to catch the eye of employers. There’ll be lectures and seminars combined with work-based learning and plenty of course options to personalise your studies.
Year one provides a detailed introduction to computer systems, design and programming and you’ll apply what you learn on your first work placement. Year two covers specialisms such as databases, software engineering and networks – and there’s a further work placement.
Whatever branch of technology you want to enter, from mobile apps to international business systems, supercomputer research to the web, this course is a solid step in the right direction – to a good job or towards higher qualifications and research.
By the time you graduate, you’ll be a confident computer scientist and engineer with a sound understanding of the main principles, valuable work experience and the ability to create applications and solutions using different technologies.
Additionally you’ll be ready for the professional workplace, with a sound knowledge of the relevant methods and practices, strong planning, administration and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work effectively with fellow team members.
Complete this course and you can transfer to year three of either our BSc (Hons) Computer Science course, taught in Cambridge or Kings Lynn, or BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Systems, taught in Peterborough.

Academic qualification equivalents
- HSC/Standard 12 with an overall average of 50% from the West Bengal exam board
- HSC/Standard 12 with an overall average of 55% from the following exam boards: CBSE, Delhi, Mumbai, Tamil Nadu
- HSC/Standard 12 with an overall average of 60% with at least 40% in a minimum of 5 subjects from any other exam board
- a recognised foundation qualification
English language requirements
If English is not your first language you'll need to be able to show you have the required level of English language. This is so we can ensure you'll be able to follow your course.
- Our standard entry criteria for undergraduate courses is IELTS 6.0 or equivalent, with nothing lower than 5.5 in any of the four elements (listening, speaking, reading and writing).
- ETS TOEFL iBT with 80 overall and a minimum of 17 in Writing and Listening, 18 in Reading and 20 in Speaking
- Pearson PTE with 57 overall and a minimum of 51 in all components.
