About Bachelor Of Science (honours) In Nursing in University of Malta

The overall aim of the B.Sc. (Hons.) in Nursing programme is to prepare first-level nurses who are able to provide effective evidence-based patient-centered care. This course aims to provide students with an understanding of nursing’s distinct knowledge base as well as knowledge derived from the other life and social sciences. It also aims to equip students with the ability to perform the required clinical skills competently and in full knowledge of the current evidence. It is in view of this that this course comprises both theoretical and practical components, with a diversified content that is designed to develop the students’ ability to draw upon the various types of knowledge, the appropriate skills and an understanding of an individual’s personal wishes, to guide the appropriate nursing action in a variety of settings. The 3 year programme conforms to the European Union Directives on Nursing Education and secures recognition as a first level nurse across EU member states.

Learning outcomes

The course aims to prepare prospective nurses who through critical thinking, knowledge and reflection are able to practice in a professional, accountable manner. 
Provide students with knowledge of the theories and concepts that underpin and challenge nursing practice.
Provides students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes central to nursing to function effectively, as a professional nurse, using evidence based interventions in a variety of health care environments.
Provide students with the interpersonal skills to be key members of the multidisciplinary team within any health care setting.

Career opportunites and access to further studies

On successful completion of the course, candidates are eligible to apply for registration with the Malta Council for Nurses and Midwives.

Graduate nurses work in a variety of health care settings, such as the community and occupational health care setting, and engage in a variety of roles, such as management and policy development roles. Employment and educational opportunities are prevalent across all sectors.

The successful completion of the undergraduate programme renders a candidate eligible for application for enrollment on to Master’s programmes of studies.

 

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics. 

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements

An Advanced Level pass in Biology

provided that applicants in possession of a pass in the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care (Health Studies) or the MCAST Advanced Diploma in Health Sciences, together with the MCAST Level 5 Award in Health Sciences shall be considered as having satisfied both the general and special entry requirements. 

Whilst filling in the online application, applicants must have their Police Certificate of Conduct in hand as they are required to include certain details from the Police Certificate of Conduct in the application form.

On acceptance, applicants are required to submit a recent Police Certificate of Conduct (not more than 6 months old) to the respective Departmental Secretary at the Faculty of Health Sciences (Block A, Level 1, Mater Dei Hospital). It is advisable that this mandatory document is submitted by hand. Further instructions will be communicated to accepted applicants at a further stage. 

Prior to registering for the Course, eligible applicants are also required to undergo a medical fitness test as directed by the Board so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies.
