This course is designed to provide rigorous and systematic coverage of topics relating to learning and development. Mastery of the knowledge, skills, and competencies addressed in the programme will enable graduates to become more proficient and professional educators at college-level and in other learning and development contexts.

A considerable body of scholarly knowledge, far greater than often realised, exists on how students learn and how their learning can be facilitated through effective teaching. This programme provides candidates with a sound foundation in (1) various theoretical perspectives on effective learning and teaching; (2) practical skills to apply these theoretical understandings to one’s own training; and (3) research skills needed to extend understanding of learning and teaching to others and to investigate new techniques for learner development.

Award and Progression

The Postgraduate Diploma in Arts in Learning and Teaching is awarded by QQI at level 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications. Students who successfully complete this course may opt to defer this award and proceed to complete the Master of Arts inLearning and Teaching.

Indicative Schedule

Tuesday and Thursday 18.30 - 21.30 and some Saturdays 09.30 - 13.30. Some classes may be delivered online.

 

 

Applicants holding an honours degree 2.2 (level 8) in any discipline ideally with professional involvement in the delivery of learning in education or in training will be considered for the course. The college operates a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) scheme meaning applicants who do not meet the normal academic requirements may be considered based on relevant work and other experience. An interview with the Programme Director will be required for all applicants. Depending on where applicants are working, there may also be a requirement for Garda vetting.
