What is the programme about?

This skills-based programme offers students an exciting opportunity to explore the world of the broadcast media industry, covering a range of disciplines across Film & TV Production, Visual Effects, editing, radio, audio mixing, photography, as well as broadcast technologies across a range of new and traditional media platforms. 

Upon successful completion of this Level 7 programme, students progress to the Level 8 BSc (Honours) degree. We offer our students a range of prospects for both academic & career progression in the broadcast, film, creative media industries, as well as extensive hands-on production work experience. If you have a story to tell, we will show you how.

What standard of Mathematics is required for entry to this course? 
A minimum of Grade D3 in Ordinary Level Maths is recommended.

Do I need to have Physics or Engineering in the Leaving Certificate to apply for the course? 
No. Camera optics, electricity and sound are studied in 1st year but no prior knowledge is assumed.

What is the breakdown of course contact hours between the Practical and Theoretical element of the course? 
An emphasis is placed on the practical element of the course with the breakdown being approximately 50:50. Your career opportunities are significantly broadened if you develop a good portfolio of practical work during your studies.

Do I need to have any practical experience before applying to this course? 
While having experience is a great benefit, we assume that first year students don't have any and so we start at a fundamental level.

My interest lies mainly in film as opposed to broadcast, will this course give me the same grounding in this area? 
The course is primarily focussed on the technology and operations of the broadcast industry. However, there are opportunities to develop short films as part of assignments and we run a successful annual Film Festival for which students are encouraged to develop their own films.

Do I need do have my own camera equipment for this course?
No. While some students do find it beneficial to purchase and use their own personal equipment, camera, sound, lighting and editing equipment is provided for use in undertaking assignments associated with your studies.

I haven’t been accepted for a Music or Sound Engineering course. Is the Video & Sound programme a good alternative? 
Many people apply to the course with sound engineering and music recording in mind. However, the Video & Sound Technology programme is aimed towards the Broadcast Industry and the technology and operations of video and television, of which audio does play a part but isn't the only focus. LIT’s BSc in Music Technology is more sound engineering orientated.

Can I progress to a Level 8 degree from this course? 
Yes. Many graduates choose to pursue their education to our Level 8 BSc (Hons) in Audio and Video Production.

Further Studies

Many graduates choose to pursue their education to our Level 8 BSc (Hons) in Audio and Video Production in order to gain employment in positions where further study and progression is a distinct advantage.

Entry Requirement

Minimum Entry Requirements: 

Leaving Certificate: A minimum of 5 06/H7 grades in Leaving Certificate subjects, including Mathematics and English or Irish. Foundation Level Mathematics at grade F2 or higher is acceptable as meeting the Mathematics requirement for this programme.
