Mental Health nursing is a specialist field within the health care profession. Over the course of this four-year honours degree course, students will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet the nursing needs of individuals experiencing a range of mental health feelings, problems and conflicts.
Course Description
The nurse is concerned with helping to restore and maintain mental health and has an educational role in the promotion of recovery and the reduction/prevention of mental health distress. The primary objective of mental health nursing is to facilitate the maximum development of the mental health of the individual who has mental health problems and to promote mental health in the wider community.
At the heart of the role of the mental health nurse is the ability to establish therapeutic relationships with individuals and their families. Good communication skills are essential to form and maintain these relationships.
Over the course of this four-year course, you will develop the professional knowledge, skills and attitude needed to communicate with people experiencing mental distress and to form a therapeutic relationship with them and their families. Student’s theoretical knowledge and practical skills will be developed through the use of innovative and traditional teaching and learning approaches in modern teaching spaces and simulated learning environments.
