Promoting this view of childhood, supporting it and advocating for a dignified growing up of children is the task of childhood educators. The course prepares students for all professional fields in which they have to do with the educational processes of children from their birth to their 14th year.
Contents, goals and course of study
Counter everyday pedagogical life with sound knowledge
The course is interdisciplinary in order to effectively and stimulatingly convey a wide range of theoretical knowledge bases and their practical relevance and implementation in everyday teaching.
Practical relevance is an essential element of studying at the Faculty of Social and Legal Sciences at the SRH University in Heidelberg. The knowledge acquired is deepened in case studies, project and group work. The close interlinking of theory and practice conveys a high level of competence and optimally prepares the students for professional life. A six-year internship is an integral part of the course so that the students get to know the complexity of pedagogical activities with children and their families in different situations during their studies.
Contents of the course
The course includes content from the disciplines of general pedagogy, sociology, philosophy, psychology, social work, health and language sciences. During the course of the course, students learn to understand the theoretical relationships between the individual disciplines and to reflect on them in practice. Due to the changed social framework, the demands on the responsible institutions and the educators working there have increased enormously. In addition, the educational mandate has increasingly come into the public eye due to the current educational policy debates.
In the three-year course, the students acquire in addition to the basic specialist skills, in-depth methodological and managerial skills that are necessary for effective pedagogical action.
Career, prospects
The course opens up a wide range of professional fields in childcare facilities, family, social and specialist advice, inpatient work with children and adolescents in socio-educational and psychiatric institutions, and in the field of childhood research. There is also the option of entering self-employment and the international job market.
Due to the high demand for highly qualified specialists in childhood education work fields (from birth to 14 years of age), the graduates of the SRH University of Heidelberg are coveted specialists in the educational labor market with the completion of the state-recognized childhood educator (Bachelor of Arts).
Graduates of the "Childhood Education" degree can work in the following occupational fields:
- in day care centers (crèche, daycare center, after-school care)
- in family centers, family counseling and family education
- in schools with extra-curricular or educational enhancement offers (all-day school)
- in early intervention
- Specialist advice for day care centers
- Inpatient care for children and adolescents in psychiatric and socio-educational institutions
- Management and management functions in institutions with a focus on childhood education
