Program Highlights

Through classes combining hands-on instruction and theory, you’ll learn structural steel design, fabrication, welding and metallurgy in preparation for a career as a welding specialist or quality control and inspection officer.

Program Description

The Welding Engineering Technology program offers full- time, two years of hands-on education. The first year focuses on academic fundamentals and structural steel design and fabrication. During the second year you will learn pressure vessel design, construction and testing. You will design, build and test a pressure vessel as part of your final project. Practical welding skills are also developed to gain an in-depth understanding of welding processes.

Your Career

Graduates may find work as welding specialist on engineering teams, researchers, supervisors, quality control and inspection officers and in technical sales. As a specialist on the engineering team, the technologist not only understands the welding processes used in metal fabrication, but is also trained in quality control, welding metallurgy, codes, fabrication techniques, inspections, drafting, weld design, management and supervision, computer skills, and project management.

Credentials and Accreditation

After successfully completing this program, graduates will receive a SAIT diploma in Welding Engineering Technology.

This program is nationally accredited by Technology Accreditation Canada. Graduates may apply to the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta for their Certified Engineering Technologist designation after two years of appropriate industrial experience. While at SAIT, students are encouraged to become members in the Canadian Welding AssociationAmerican Society for Materials, National Association of Corrosion Engineers and the Association of Science& Engineering Technology.

  • Completion of All India or State Board HSC (XII): 60% or higher in relevant subjects.

SAIT Admission requirements and process

Admission at SAIT Polytechnic requires additional documents from international applicants. Application requirements for various programs are given below.


Selection CriteriaSAIT Polytechnic opens the admissions in the Fall Start and continues until the Spring start. Different programs have different time periods for their admission process.

  • The application fee charged is 75.00 CAD once for each program enrolment.
  • Percentage required in schools and the other major requirements are different for all courses:
    • A 65% record or a cumulative GPA of minimum 2.3 is required for the Bachelor’s of business administration.
    • Other courses require a minimum of 50%.
    • A common requirement in all the courses is the English proficiency.
    • Admission into the Institute is determined on the academic records.
    • Graduate employment rate in the institute is 94%
