About Disability Studies in Norquest Collage
Overview
Acquire the skills needed to support individuals with disabilities in early intervention, community settings, schools, recreation, and employment. You will be prepared to create, implement, assess, and modify plans to help utilize individual strengths and abilities to increase opportunities for meaningful participation in the community.
Transferability
NorQuest College will seek a block transfer of the Disability Studies diploma into the Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation at University of Calgary. Additional transfer agreements, such as with the Bachelor of Professional Arts Program (Human Services Major) at Athabasca University, will be pursued.
Additional NorQuest internal credit transfer:
- transfer from Early Learning and Child Care certificate
- transfer from Community Support Worker
Career Potential
The program will prepare graduates for employment in a number of careers in the non-profit sector for Community Disability Sector Services, and various departments within municipal and provincial governments, including Family Managed Services (Alberta Children’s Services and Disability Services Division). Employment opportunities exist including:
- early interventionist
- community disability support worker
- home support worker
- community outreach worker
- employment assistance worker
- residential assistant
- therapeutic assistant (behavior)
- education assistant
- managers of agencies
- development support worker
Academic qualification equivalents
- 65% in Mathematics 20-1 or Mathematics 20-2 or equivalent, or 50% in Mathematics 30-1 or Mathematics 30-2 or equivalent
English language requirements (one of the below):
- IELTS : Academic: 6; no section score below 5.5
- TOEFL : 71

Application deadline: The international students whose study plans have been affected by COVID-19 can start their studies from Fall 2020 to Winter 2021 within the same program. The deferral deadline is July 15, 2020.
