Advance your practiceIf you are a registered nurse interested in working in a critical care area such as a multi-system/ cardiovascular intensive care unit, or emergency, or are currently working in a critical care area and want to advance your knowledge and skills, Mount Royal University's distance certificate program in Advanced Studies in Critical Care Nursing (ACCN) offers you an unbeatable combination of self-paced theoretical coursework and superb clinical placements.
Specialty Streams
This program offers two distinct streams of study:
Critical Care Nursing
A certificate program consisting of four theory courses and a clinical practicum directed towards preparing the registered nurse to care for critically ill patients in a variety of areas such a multi-system/ cardiovascular intensive care unit.
Emergency Nursing
A certificate program consisting of four theory courses and a clinical practicum directed towards preparing the registered nurse for caring for a wide variety of patients presenting to the Emergency department.
Experiential, student-centred learning
The clinical practicum is a preceptored placement in a critical care or emergency setting. Faculty will guide your practicum based on your personal learning needs, skill development, and program objectives. The ACCN program has agreements in place with many agencies across Western Canada to meet our students' needs for clinical placements.
Also, nurses with recent clinical experience (minimum 1 year) in these areas, wishing to advance their knowledge with the theory courses, have the option to challenge the clinical practicum.
We strongly recommend 1 – 2 years medical/surgical experience in acute care prior to the clinical practicum.
Continuing competency
Advanced Critical Care Nursing courses are transferable to other universities. In addition, your certificate courses can serve as not only nursing practice hours for renewal of your nursing registration but also can be counted towards your professional continuing competencies.
