What you will study
The mining engineering degree is comprised of two years’ study at UON. The remaining two years are undertaken at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) or the University of Wollongong (UOW).
You will complete the first two years of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Civil) at UON and study courses in:
- mathematics
- structural and environmental mechanics
- geomechanics
- technology and human values
- surveying
- computer programming
In second year you may apply through the University Admission Centre (UAC) to complete your Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mining) at UNSW or UOW. Applications are subject to the normal admission requirements and offers are based on competitive assessment.
Career opportunities
The mining sector is dominated by large and often multinational companies. The industry is split into two sectors – one specialising in exploration for new resources, and the other in mining those resources. Careers pursued as a mining engineer track the development of a mine from discovery of a mineral resource through to design, commissioning operations and beyond, including:
