About Western New England University

Western New England University was founded in 1919 as a private, non-profit institution in Springfield, Massachusetts. In 2011, it became a university. It is affiliated with the Association of American Colleges and Universities, the Association of Independent Colleges, the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges, the Massachusetts Universities, and the College Entrance Examination Board. It is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education.

It confers degrees in both the liberal arts and professional fields. The academic departments of the university are organised into five academic schools: the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Engineering, and the School of Professional Law.

The Western New England University Honors Programme is available to students accepted by their respective Colleges. It is proposed to provide academically qualified and motivated students with the opportunity to join a community and enrol in rigorous courses taught by some of the university's most seasoned faculty. The Programme enables students to broaden their education by taking courses in numerous disciplines.

Western New England University students enrolled in the Global Scholars programme have the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of a region or country outside the United States through coursework and international study experiences. While each Global Scholars program's structure is managed by the college where the student is enrolled, each Global Scholars programme is administered by a college. Every single Global Scholar programme incorporates the core elements, which include study abroad, international issues, area studies, and foreign language courses. The College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, and College of Engineering offer the programmes.

Students can receive merit-based scholarships and grants from the University ranging from $10,000 to $22,000 annually or $40,000 to $88,000 over four years. These are awarded to first-year, full-time students upon acceptance to the university. In addition to need-based scholarships, the University also offers grants and awards based on financial need and prior academic achievement.

John Joseph Bell, an Air Force officer and delegate in the Virginia House of Delegates, and Nicholas Baldyga, a delegate in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, are notable alumni. Thomas G. Bowman JD, an American political aide and retired Marine Corps colonel who served as United States Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and Stephen Buoniconti JD'95, a former member of the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives, are also notable alumni of the university. Lawrence F. Cafero, JD '81, is a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives and the Republican House Leader. He is also a well-known Western New England University alumnus.
