Methodists founded Valparaiso Male and Female College in 1859, which later became Valparaiso University. It was one of the earliest co-educational schools in the country. Due to losses sustained during the Civil War, the college was closed in 1871. In 1873, Henry Baker Brown renamed it Northern Indiana Normal School. The school was renamed Valparaiso College in 1900 and granted its current name in 1905. The university is now accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and has received approval from a number of other bodies and organisations.
The university campus, which spans 350 acres and houses over 60 residential and academic buildings, is located in Valparaiso, Indiana. Harre Student Union has a computer lab, career centre, bookshop, and two eating options, Campus Cafe and Founders Table, with a total space of 202,000 square feet. The Chapel of the Resurrection, located on the highest point on campus, is one of Northwest Indiana's most well-known monuments. A 275-seat theatre, the Brauer Museum of Art, and a 170-seat recital hall are all part of the Center for the Arts. The Christopher Center for Library and Information Resources on campus contains 180 accessible computers and a collection of 6,00,000 books.
There are seven fraternity houses and nine apartment complexes and residence halls among the residential facilities. Athletic facilities on campus include four high-tech gyms, racquetball courts, an indoor pool and track, and a fitness centre with weights and cardio machines for students. Uninterrupted internet access, media-equipped labs and classrooms, modern equipment, digital audio-video labs, a weather forecasting studio, and tele-production studios are among the other services available.
