Florence's University of North Alabama (UNA) is a highly ranked institution of higher education and research for women and men. It was founded in 1830 as LaGrange College and is Alabama's oldest four-year public university. In 1855, the college changed its name to Florence Wesleyan University. However, it was destroyed by fire in 1863 and rebuilt in 1972. In 1974, the university, which is accredited by the Schools Commission on Colleges and the Southern Association of Colleges, adopted its current name.
The 130-acre campus of the university is comprised of well-maintained buildings, shaded walkways, expansive lawns, sculptures, and fountains. In 2006, UNA acquired the J.W. Powell School, also known as the East Campus. A few academic units and culinary facilities are located on the East Campus, although the majority of offices and classrooms are on the main campus. Various stores, restaurants, and other conveniences are within walking distance of the main campus.
Collier Library, Music Library, Kilby School Library, and the Learning Resources Center make up the University's library system. In 2018, the Collier Library launched a digital repository to house the research and scholarly output of the university's students and faculty. The Collier Library houses more than 350,000 volumes. The Student Recreation Center contains a fitness centre, gymnasium, aerobics studio, and sports fields. There are also a medical centre, an amphitheatre, a community centre, eight residence halls, three apartment-style residences, and a variety of dining options.
Five colleges at UNA offer a variety of undergraduate and graduate business, arts, sciences, education, and health programmes. The university currently enrols over 7,490 students from 37 countries, with 59% female and 41% male students. There are 365 highly-qualified and knowledgeable members of the academic staff. The university has a student-to-teacher ratio of 17:1 with the majority of classes having at least 24 students.
The university offers students numerous opportunities to study abroad through exchange programmes in Africa, France, China, and Australia, among others. In addition to this, the Students' Association oversees numerous academic and personal interest-focused sororities, fraternities, and organisations. Through various events, competitions, and activities, they promote cultural unity, relationship growth, and opportunities for leadership. The university has 14 sports teams (6 men's and 8 women's) that compete under the name Lions.
UNA has a vast network of more than 60,000 alumni. The list of notable alumni includes Clay Bennett (Editorial Cartoonist), Priyanka Karki (Nepalese Actress, Model, and Choreographer), Pamela K.
