About University of Kentucky

The University of Kentucky, founded in 1865, is an open, coeducational institution affiliated with the Southeastern Universities Research Association. Previously, it was known as the Kentucky Agricultural and Mechanical College. In 1916, it obtained university status. Additionally, the university is recognised as one of the largest in the state. In 1876, the university began offering master's degrees, and in 1885, an Agriculture Experiment Station was established to conduct research on agricultural business, nutrition, food processing, environment, soil resources, and water. It was the nation's first research institution. In the same year, the College of Home Economics was established, and in 1925, the College of Commerce was constructed.

The campus encompasses approximately 784 acres of land. It consists of 23 residence halls and seven dining facilities. It is home to more than 200 student organisations. Patterson Office Tower, Chandler Hospital, Administrative Block, Student Centre, and Alumni Gym are among the few prominent campus buildings. In addition, there are nine notable libraries on campus, including the Design Library, Education Library, Law Library, Agricultural Information Centre, Fine Arts Library, Science & Engineering Library, Medical Centre Library, William T Young Library, and Special Collections Research Centre. In addition, the residences provide students with all necessary amenities. They enjoy a tranquil learning environment. The residence halls are well-kept by the administration. Numerous cafes and restaurants surround the campus. It is also in close proximity to department stores, ATMs, stationery stores, and pharmacies. The university is easily accessible by public transportation.

According to a survey conducted in 2015-16, the university had approximately 30,720 students enrolled. The university offers both undergraduate and graduate-level degree programmes. The academic curriculum of the university consists of a wide range of subjects organised into colleges, including the College of Communication & Information, the College of Dentistry, the College of Design, the College of Engineering, the College of Business & Economics, the College of Health Sciences, the College of Public Health, the College of Law, and the College of Agriculture, Food, & Environment. According to their respective areas of interest, students have a great deal of course selection freedom. Thomas Hunt Morgan (Nobel Prize in Physiology), Mitch McConnell (Present Senate Majority Leader, United States), Ashley Judd (Famous Actress), William Lipscomb (Nobel Prize in Chemistry), Ted Strickland (Former Governor of Ohio), and Paul Chellgren are among the university's notable alumni (CEO of Ashland Inc).
