In Riverside, California, California Baptist University is one of the most prestigious private Christian liberal arts universities. It was initially founded in 1950 as California Baptist College. The university is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is affiliated with the California Southern Baptist Convention. The Los Angeles Southern Baptist Association established California Baptist College in El Monte in September 1950. In the fall of 1950, the college opened with 42 students. During the 1950-1951 academic year, 120 students were enrolled. After four years of continuous expansion, the college relocated to better facilities in Riverside.
Currently, the Spanish-style buildings on the 160-acre campus include campus housing, classrooms, offices, a library, athletic facilities, and maintenance facilities. CBU continues the liberal arts education tradition despite its dynamic growth in a Christian environment. The university is affiliated with twelve schools and colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, Architecture, Visual Arts and Design, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Health Sciences, Gordon and Jill Bourns College of Engineering, College of Nursing, Dr. Robert K. Jabs School of Business, Dr. Bonnie J. Metcalf School of Education, School of Christian Ministries, Shelby and Ferne Collinsworth School of Music, Dr. Paul and Annie Kienel Leadership Institute, and Divisio.
