Heriot-Watt University was founded as the first university for mechanical engineering in 1821. It went through a number of subsequent name changes and was named Heriot-Watt University in 1966, attaining university status. The university is UK's eighth-oldest institution of higher education.

It is one of the UK's 39 old universities comprising the distinctive second-cluster after Oxbridge (Cambridge, Oxford) of elite universities. 

The university has five campuses located in Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders, Dubai, Malaysia and Orkney. 

Heriot Watt University Campus 

Heriot-Watt currently has three campuses in UK , in Edinburgh, Scottish Borders and Orkney .

At present Heriot-Watt has three campuses in the UK, Aberdeen, Scottish Highlands and Orkney.

The main campus of Heriot-Watt is located on 380 acres of parkland in Riccarton in south west Edinburgh. The campus is composed of: academic buildings, student residences, a postgraduate center, shops, several library collections, child care, health care, a chaplaincy, a variety of recreational and sports facilities, and a museum, as well as the main premises of the Student Union. The University's Petroleum Engineering Institute is located on its Edinburgh campus.

The Scottish Borders Campus at Heriot-Watt in Galashiels is home to the School of Textile and Design at the university.

Heriot-Watt's campus in Stromness, Orkney, is home to the International Centre for Island Technology (ICIT).

  • Overseas Scholarship Scheme: International students holding a first degree with a classification equivalent to a first-class B.Sc. degree. The scholarship amount is £2500 and the application deadline is June 30.
