Edge Hill Institution is a campus-based, public university that first opened its doors as Edge Hill College in 1885. It was the first non-denominational teacher training college for women in Ormskirk, Lancashire, England. In 1959, the first male pupils were admitted. The Privy Council granted Edge Hill the "Taught Degree Awarding Powers" in 2005. Notably, on May 18, 2006, it changed its name to Edge Hill University. The university's first chancellor was Tanya Byron. He was a broadcaster, novelist, columnist, and clinical psychologist.
In addition to teacher training programmes, Edge Hill University also provides B.Sc., B.A., LLB, and other degrees. Additionally, it offers postgraduate programmes like the MBA, MPhil, and MRes. Edge Hill University also provides PhD research programmes. The institution maintains a student zone with retail and catering establishments, IT resources, and the office of the students' union. The Countess of Wessex gave the structure its royal opening on October 15, 2012. Additionally, it has a games facility with both indoor and outdoor areas that was opened in 2015 by Olympic pentathlete Katarina Johnson Thompson.
The acclaimed British playwright and creator of the opening ceremony for the London 2012 Summer Olympics, Frank Cottrell Boyce, inaugurated the university's performing arts programme. The Rose Theater, a professional theatre with 234 seats, and the Studio Theater, with 140 seats, are both located at the Arts Center. The Catalyst acts as both the student centre of services and information as well as the library on the Ormskirk campus. The library, which was opened in the 1990s, was later replaced by another tall structure.
To take advantage of the part-time jobs available through the Edge Hill Works vacancy service, new students are recommended to contact the university's career centre as soon as feasible. This helps pupils develop their abilities and confidence. Additionally, as a result of the university's employer liaison programmes, local businesses frequently visit the campus and offer part-time positions. The institution also advertises summer jobs both domestically and internationally.
Help is available to students and graduates through the university's award-winning careers centre, which closely collaborates with the academic divisions. The careers centre provides details about placement campaigns and volunteer opportunities. Career modules, career events, and company guest speakers are all included in the training programmes here.
