MUN, commonly known as Memorial University, is a multidisciplinary institution committed to excellence, innovation, and originality in teaching, scholarship, research, and public engagement. In 1925, it was founded as Memorial University College (MUC) as a tribute to the Newfoundlanders who gave their lives in World War I. The institution is considered as one of Atlantic Canada's largest universities, with a community of academics and students from throughout the world, including more than 18,000 students from more than 100 countries and more than 95,000 alumni worldwide. Additionally, it has received recognition as one of Canada's finest comprehensive colleges.
There are four major campuses and two satellite campuses at Memorial University. The school's main campus is in St. John's, and it provides a number of academic programmes in a city setting. The Grenfell campus of the university is known for its environmental and fine arts programmes. One of the largest maritime teaching facilities in the world is thought to be its Marine Institute.
