Originally known as Grant MacEwan Community College, MacEwan University was founded in 1971. The college was granted permission to provide university transfer programmes in 1988. Later in 2009, it was officially renamed MacEwan University for all marketing and public relations purposes, becoming Alberta's sixth university. This is Alberta's largest higher education transfer institution, offering undergraduate programmes.
The institution, which is located in Edmonton, the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta, offers 43 diploma and certificate programmes in addition to 2 applied degrees and 8 bachelor degrees. The university continues to have four colleges and two schools, which provide programmes in areas like business, engineering, physical education, nursing, liberal arts and sciences, and health and community studies. More than 19,000 full- and part-time students can receive an education at the university. More than 12,300 students are enrolled in credit programmes as well. The City Centre Campus and Alberta College Campus are under the administration of the university. Edmonton's previous campus, which is the larger one, spans seven city blocks. The campus offers a large number of certificate and diploma programmes in human services, health, and business along with the majority of the university's degree programmes. The university's administrative division is located on the City Centre Campus. A kilometre away from the City Centre Campus, Alberta College also provides programmes in music, English as a Second Language (ESL), and educational advancement.
In addition to this, the institution provides a variety of scholarships, awards, and grants to encourage programme participants and support their post-secondary study. The Student Awards Offices successfully dispersed a $8.4 million money from internal and external sources to over 6,000 outstanding students throughout the academic year 2015–2016. In addition to its academic reputation, the university is proud of its Griffins sports team. Sports available to university students include volleyball, hockey, soccer, curling, basketball, cross-country running, and golf.
The university has two libraries, the John L. Haar Library and the Alberta College Library. The institution may be proud of the thousands of alumni who are now employed in a variety of societal sectors. Some of the university's well-known alumni are currently in leadership positions in their fields of study. Some well-known university graduates include Emmett Hartfield (co-founder of Intelligence House), Dr. James Makokis (Two-Spirit physician), Mark Power (writer, filmmaker, counsellor, and creator of Give of Yourself), and Dr. D. Scharie Tavcer (associate professor at Mount Royal University).
